The technique
What Is Barro Betus?
Barro betus is a centuries-old ceramic technique found only in Santa Cruz de las Huertas, Jalisco — a small village that has quietly kept this tradition alive while the world rushed past.
The process begins with naturally black clay, shaped entirely by hand and left to dry in the open air to prevent cracking in the kiln. Once shaped and fired, each piece is painted with vivid mineral colors. The final step is betus oil — a warm varnish made from pine resin and egg whites that gives the work its signature luminous finish and preserves it for generations.
No molds. No machines. No shortcuts.
Every piece is one of a kind.
Three steps. One tradition.
